PowerSchool 6.1.0.2

Pearson today (2/26/2010) released version PowerSchool 6.1.0.2. With this update also comes a new set of Oracle Jobs, 1.4. You need to install Oracle Jobs 1.4 before installing the update.

IMPORTANT - With this new version of PowerSchool and Oracle Jobs a nightly data dump is performed (Which is kept for 7 days then overwritten). If you upgrade to PS 6.1.0.2 it is important to Disable any non Pearson scripted data dumps until you have adjusted for this.

When you update to 6.1.0.2 you need to disable the Server Backup script and/or Auto Test Server Update customizations until we at PDS can adjust for this. Attempting to run multiple data dumps can cause issues. Please be aware of this.

6.2 backup script

Will you also be working on a 6.2 solution?

updated psSrvrBackup.bat

Has anyone posted the revised bat files for 6.1.0.2?

Havent Upgraded yet but about to....

So the nightly dump that Powerschool does is ok and it will continue to do so? Are you talking about if someone has scripted a custom event to dump data at different intervals, to disable these custom scripts or to disable anything that backs up the Pearson nightly dump? Sounds confusing I'm sure but this is my question. I have Symantec Backup Exec running nightly backups of these dumps to an external array. Is this safe to continue doing? Did Pearson change the files and structure that I should be backing up?

Re: Havent Upgraded yet but about to....

Some people used scripts from this site or made their own to run a export nightly. The new Oracle Job's installs a export of its own, so every night Oracle does it's own data dump around 4am. This nightly export is placed in the data_pump_dir folder on your server. So the custom data export is no longer needed and your server could be doing a export twice a night.

Forgot to install Oracle Jobs 1.4

I just realized after reading some documentation that I did not install Oracle Jobs 1.4 when I upgraded to 6.1.0.2.5102. PowerSchool has been running for a couple of weeks with no apparent issues. Can you advise how I would install Oracle Jobs 1.4 now that I've updated all of our server array? I assume it gets installed on the database server. Correct? Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: Forgot to install Oracle Jobs 1.4

You just need to install the Oracle Jobs on the DB server. You don't need to shut anything down to do this. The new Oracle Jobs sets up a nightly data export at 4am.

conference

Does PSUG NE offer only one conference a year?

Conference

Yes, once a year. It will be held between August 2 - 4 this summer, at the same place (Shrewsbury High School, Shrewsbury MA). More information can be found here: http://sites.google.com/a/psug-ma.org/summer2.

Course Request Table Name?

What is the name of the table where PowerSchool stores course requests for next year?

I'd like to use Access to create a report for parents of incoming students, providing them a list of the courses their sons will be enrolled in.

Thanks for your help!

course request table name

i think it is ScheduleRequests (82)

New backup feature

Does this new backup feature that comes with Oracle Jobs 1.4 and PS 6.1.0.2 run automatically. It may sound silly, but that is what I assumed when reading the release notes that only tell you how to DISABLE it.

However, I'm not seeing the exports being created on our Windows test server which I just recently installed Oracle Jobs 1.4 and the 6.1.0.2 update. Initial reports from PS support indicate that this is not an automatic feature and was not intended to be.

Am I confused or not missing something?

Re: New backup feature

The new export created by Oracle Jobs 1.4 should run automatically, there should be day_full_expdp.dmp files created nightly in the oradata\PSPRODDB\data_pump_dir folder. They get overwritten once you come back around to that date.

Issue resolved

This from support,

...the Oracle Jobs Service was Disabled, and Terminal Services was Enabled. Therefore, disabled Terminal Services and recommended to the client to restart the server; as well as Enabled and Started the Oracle Jobs Service...

I have a feeling that this was an issue because our test server was just re-built from scratch and this was something I neglected to do (or was not set automatically).

Turn off new backup

If we wanted to continue using the custom backup and auto test server update scripts, can't we just disable the new backup feature by setting the PS.DAILY_FULL_EXPDP job to false in PowerSchool Administrator as was outlined on page 7 of the release notes for 6.1.0.2?

Re: Turn off new backup

In my opinion is best to leave Pearson's feature enabled. It's a pretty simple fix. The script just needs to be changed to accommodate for Pearson's file name convention. I installed 6.1.0.2 on Saturday so I now know the name convention, so I hope to post a 6.1.0.2 version of the script today.

Help needed with custom backup scripts removal

We wish to upgrade to 6.1.0.2 On a macintosh 10.4.11 PPC server. We used the PDS Mac backup customization script. Am I correct in that I need to remove the daily.local file from /etc location before attempting this upgrade?

That's what I'm going to do.

That's what I'm going to do. I'm the one who wrote that script.

I'm eventually going to rewrite it so that it compresses PowerSchool's new backup files and adds the custom directories to the backup file so that everything is in one file, but for now just remove it.
