Icon Control V 3.1
This customization is obsolete, you should use the Enhanced Parent Portal instead
Allows a school or district to show or hide icons on the public portal. The solution now cleans up the automatic e-mail page options when those options are hiden from normal view and displays a message when the grade & attendance page is hidden. Incorporates Roger Sprik's customization that allows a student to submit course requests just one time.

icon control works beautiful
What a fine piece of workmanship!! It is exactly what I need. A while back principals at 2 elementary schools that use standards grading had requested that I disable the 2 grades links on the parent portal. You made it so easy. Thank you!!!!
Javascript
I think this javascript should be removed or edited from the guardian_header.txt:
Publishing a customization with such a script without telling the enduser to edit or remove it is not good practice. Especially since the custom message only surfaced for us recently and not a couple months ago when I first tested the pages. I certainly learned my lesson to look thru the code more carefully!
We also had the issue of all of the icons appearing after students submitted their class registration (set to edit 1x). Not sure if this is a known issue?
Overall we were pleased with the customization - thank you!
Re: JavaScript
I have removed the reference from the wildcard and posted a new version.
I don't think it was anyone's intent to have this message show up on other users servers. It can become difficult sometimes to keep track of every little revision. I have at least 40 custom page packages not including different revisions, many of which are specific to my district. It's easy to package the wrong version of a file.

Thanks Brian. I know it
Thanks Brian. I know it wasn't intentional, just caused a little concern on our end when we couldn't figure out where the message came from. We are still very grateful.

Icon not Showing on A Student Screen
I have modified the password change so parent and student and can reset only their password. when a parent logs on it works fine but when a student logs in the password change icon does not show up. I have removed the if statement from the original guardian_header.txt file. Any ideas. We are on Version 5.2.1.4
Icon Control by Grade Level in school?
Kathy McKinstry
I have an unusual situation with parent access and a K-8 school. I am wondering if it is possible to use this customization but take it one step further to include an if grade_level > 5, show these icons, if grade_level < 6 show these icons. Although I have seven schools I only have one K-8 school so this is my one exception. We use PowerTeacher web-based gradebook in grades 6-8 only (others use it for formative assessment info only and don't want to share that) but we want parents to be able to look up lunch transactions and balances for students in all grades. It is a challenge.
Thanks for all of your work. Really appreciate it,
Kathy
re: Icon Control by Grade Level in school?
I have been thinking about doing this for a while. It would be nice to be able to bring our 3-5 online with more of the parent portal while keeping the K-2 out of it until they are ready. I'm not sure when this could be done but it could be done.

icons after submitting notification prefs & javascript
Very helpful customization! Thank you!
1. After submitting notification prefs, the parents can see and access ALL of the icons until they go to another screen.
2. Why is there an entry in the guardian_header.txt that calls a javascript from another District's website?
I just commented it out in ours, but others may not be aware.
Icon Control working this morning!
You're absolutely correct!!! The nightly process evidently reset all required attributes.
Icon Control V3.1 Not working
I have copied the files into the correct sub directories and I do have the "Parent Portal Settings" showing on the admin side.
I selected a few icons to be hidden but when I log into the Parent Portal, I still see all icons. How-ever, the availability of e-mail options is removed regarding the Icons that should be hidden.
Any suggestions?
We are at version 5.2.3 (Oracle)
re: Icon Control V3.1 Not working
I think it might be that you are adding a custom wildcard, which requires a reset of the wildcards. This is easily accomplished by going to Start - System - System Settings - Customization and then simply clicking the submit button.
By the time you read this it will probably be moot... the nightly processes also reset wildcards.
